Psuedo and Psychic Archaeology: Are they the same?

7/29/2011 07:24:00 PM · Comments

The History Channel perpetuates it and archaeologists detest the term, but is psychic archaeology the same science as pseudo archaeology? Not exactly.

In a recent post at Ancient Digger, I had several psychics explain the basics behind psychic archaeology. No, it has nothing to do with aliens building the pyramids, rather the historical figures who sparked a controversy during the 15th century.

The Laetoli footprints

7/27/2011 06:40:00 PM · Comments

The Laetoli footprints are fossils of footprints that look suspiciously like human footprints of today. They appear to be the fossilized footprints of two or three hominids that walked through Laetoli, Tanzania, millions of years ago. The very idea that humanoids were walking upright for as long as these fossils suggest has sparked a great deal of controversy.

Creationists typically believe that the Laetoli footprints are not millions of years old and that the footprints are not hominid, but human. Scientists tend to believe that these footprints could not have come from modern man, so it must suggest that hominids have been walking on two feet longer than previously thought.

Another Obnoxious 70K+ Square Foot Mansion?

7/24/2011 05:36:00 PM · Comments

You'll remember the 75 million dollar mansion built in Orlando, Florida created by Westgate timeshare tycoon David Siegel, but have you heard of the 75,000 square foot mansion being built in the Missouri Ozarks with 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms and other features that could include a library, music room, theater and a garage measuring 4,000 square feet?

© Dailymail

It's true. Steven Huff, the homeowner, may insist he's making a dent on the carbon footprint by building with special steel-reinforced concrete that is energy-efficient and resistant to various forces of nature, but why, really, does the house have to be so massive?

Huff recently released a statement about the home, trying to appease the naysayers I suppose about the size and reasoning behind the pricey abode.

"The mission behind Pensmore is to serve as a living laboratory for ongoing research into energy conservation and disaster resistance," he said. The house is being built as a model of efficiency and durability for large commercial buildings,as the concrete being used, absorbs heat therefore keeping the home cooler.

It will use nearly $6.9 million in building materials, according to the permit application, he said.

Ironically, the real estate agent, Matt Meadows, doesn't consider the house outlandish or unnecessarily large. Of course you wouldn't, it's your listing.

FREE Cisco Flipvideo Ultra HD From Klout Perks

7/24/2011 01:28:00 PM · Comments

I just received my FREE Cisco Flipvideo Ultra HD camera after discovering that I have some major Klout, as a specialist in the area of archaeology. My audience trusts me to create great content and I tell it like it is! This is my first Klout Perk and I wanted to thank the Klout Team and Klout president Joe Fernandez.

Within five minutes of tearing open the box, like a kid of Christmas morning, I made my first video. Imagine, a camera that takes only five minutes to learn how to use. It’s super simple. Just put in the batteries, follow the onscreen instructions, and BAM! You’re in business!

So what exactly did I film? Watch the video and see.

Do you remember those old arcade games where you’d take a mallet and hit the gopher over the head? Well, this video is an example of the game, only no mallets were used, besides a human hand.

Disclosure

I was given a free product or sample because I'm a Klout influencer. I was under no obligation to receive the sample or talk about this company. I get no additional benefits for talking about the product or company.

Florida Residents Have Strong Reaction To New Dave and Buster’s in Orlando, Florida

7/21/2011 08:18:00 PM · Comments

You’ve heard about them. You’ve probably even visited a few locations around the country. When a corporate giant like Dave and Buster’s arrives in Orlando, Florida, situated on the tourist trap that is I-Drive, please flock to it.

There are some innocent Florida residents who, on occasion, check out what’s new on International Drive, and maybe hit up a restaurant or water park, taking in the sights like any Florida tourist. But what happens when corporate America craps all over the state’s residents. Yes, we only pay taxes here and we don’t frequent the over priced theme parks as much as tourists do, but again, we still matter.

Here’s one perspective from a Florida resident after they visited the New Dave and Buster’s in Orlando. You can also check out the reviews on Yelp, which are are recent as you can get.

One reviewer stated,

We made the awful mistake of thinking we could get a table. Because the place is so new and popular there was a 3 hour wait and they didn't seem to take reservations.
This place is brand new and they actually had to shut down the door due to fire capacity.
1. The air conditioning sucks
2. The staff does not seem to be able to handle "nightclub" volumes
3. There is no cocktail service in the game room
4. The staff is rude (I witnessed the door man not allowing a mother in to collect her children)
5. Walking through the restaurant EVERY table had piles of dirty dishes, empty glasses, and customers sitting at the table looking around for their waiter.

Kelly Wade’s story

It was my birthday and I was very excited about going to the new Dave and Buster’s at I-Drive in Orlando, Florida. Upon arriving, we could not find a parking spot. Dozens of vehicles circled the building while many others were parked illegally on curves, behind other cars, and everywhere else they could jam into.

Helpful note to reader: pay the $5 valet and let the good times roll.

Well the good times did not exactly roll.

7 Conspiracy Theories

7/21/2011 07:21:00 PM · Comments

A few years ago I did a series of articles which spoke of history’s most fascinating conspiracy theories. Some of them you’re familiar with and others you never knew existed. I have compiled those articles into a list. The list comprises some of my favorite conspiracy theories, so before you start saying you forgot this or that, these are my favorites. Now tell me yours!

The Death of Thomas Harper Ince

In 1924, a yacht set sail carrying William Randolph Hearst, Marion Davies, Thomas Harper Ince, Charlie Chaplin, and many others. In the wake of an evening party, Marion Davies and Charlie Chaplin were discussing their explosive relationship. Around the corner, Hearst was listening in and preparing to take care of the jealousy that was driving him mad.

Charlie left Marion and Thomas Ince took the seat on the stairs where Charlie was previously siting. When Hearst returned, a gun already hidden in his pocket, he fired shots at the head of Thomas Ince, mistaking him for Chaplin. The events of that night are still unclear, and although some believe it's unlikely, there isn't enough evidence to prove otherwise.

Bavarian Illuminati

The Illuminati is often used in reference to a New World Order (NWO). The masterminds behind this secret society will someday, in their minds, form a new Order. If you have been exposed to this type of organization, which many of us have without our knowledge, they are similar to the Skull and Bones, and not a stretch from a normal Fraternity.

I lived a Greek life, and by doing so there were situations that I was exposed to that a normal person would not. I am not at liberty to discuss any of the happenings, but I can say this, many of your theories about these societies is spot on. Joining a society that requires some sort of initiation—secret orders or public with rites of passage or initiation- usually provides a person somewhat of an edge over competitors in life, business, and relationships.

Roswell: Alien Space Landing

In 1947, Roswell became a city of speculation after an Alien spaceship crashed and the remains were covered up by the government. Conspiracy theories predict that the remains of the spaceship along with the bodies were originally shipped to Roswell Base. They eventually ended up at Wright Patt Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio.

Bohemian Grove

"Bohemian Grove is a private campground located in California's Sonoma County. Every year, this meeting boasts a two-week gathering of the elite. A highly select group of male members consisting of Republican and Democratic presidents, CEO's, and some of the most powerful men in business and government." Walter Cronkite belongs to the same lodge as George Bush and the former chairs of Procter & Gamble and Bank of America; Cronkite's voice has served as the voice of the Owl of Bohemia or the speaker of the druid society.

The Presidents' Black Book

After watching a second installment of National Treasure "Book of Secrets", I was intrigued that they focused on a subject that hadn't been brought mainstream. I did a little digging, and even though I believe that the book may exist, there are no documents or published works discussing the mysteries inside. A book that possesses the secrets of the JFK Assassination, the shooting of Abraham Lincoln, the lost city, and many more conspiracies that rocked the world.

The Number 23: A connection

The number 23 is a connection that may have caused the mass suicide of 39 people, including Marshall Applewhite (Leader of the Heavens Gate Suicide Mission) in 1997 and it is also associated with a the UFO Religion called the Unicarious Cult.

The Holy Grail: The Cup that Holds Everlasting Life or Damnation

The Holy Grail has symbolized such things as the Fountain of Youth, Mary Magdellan, and the cup that caught the blood of Christ. Over the years, historians and scientists have paraded fakes in museums, letting the public fawn over the artifacts that might as well have been a cup they purchased at Pier One, yet no one knew the difference.

When the Da Vinci Code was released into theaters people were stunned, angered, and confused. A new theory had pushed peoples beliefs out the window, and the questions started spinning out of control. Was Mary Magdalene the true Grail? Was she carrying a child of Christ? These are questions that will remain unanswered, however your faith will lead you to believe what is true and what has been a lie. A lie fabricated within the pages of books, speaking of one true answer.

Article Round Up: Bizarre, Offbeat, WTF, Wacky Facts and Tales

Weird and Wonderful Objects From The First Ripleys in St. Augustine Florida
Robert was an eccentric man and an avid traveler, obsessed with the inner workings of anthropology and archaeology. He took the world by storm visiting far off lands and unblemished territories and cultures. Places like India and the Orient were unconventional areas for the American traveler during the 19th century, however Ripley's obsession drove him to these areas to study the local customs and speak with people in the area.

The Wildly Wacky Fartiste from the Moulin Rouge
Le Petomane, “the Fartiste” performed some imitations, using the simple, honest format of announcing and then demonstrating. He displayed his wide sonic range with tenor, baritone, and bass fart sounds. He imitated the farts of a little girl, a mother-in-law, a bride on her wedding night, the same bride the day after, and a mason. He imitated thunder, cannons, and even the sound of a dressmaker tearing two yards of fabric.

Clove Oil Recipe for Dry Socket

7/17/2011 06:32:00 AM · Comments

Just recently, I had my wisdom teeth extracted. I've had several complications during my recovery, but I've learned to combat them using an ancient recipe for Clove Oil.

Dry socket resulting from wisdom teeth extraction begins as a sudden increase in throbbing pain which is not relieved by pain medications. If you are experiencing these symptoms, your dentist will urge you to come to the office and they will place medicated gauze soaked in an infused clove oil substance in the dry socket. When I went back after suffering these terrible symptoms, the oral surgeon placed medicated gauze into the socket, which within a matter of hours, dissolved the pain.

Netflix Users Flock to Awooh

7/16/2011 10:50:00 AM · Comments

As a Netflix user myself, yes I was stunned at the recent price changes, but I really never ordered movies through the mail anyway. To be honest, $7.99 to watch streaming movies with no ads or viruses seems pretty reasonable to me, but that's just me.

Other Netflix users are flocking to free movie sites like Awooh, which as far as what I've been told and seen, has all the latest blockbusters and new releases, and can hardly compare to Netflix's outdated library.

I like free sites as much as the next person, but I can't devote my movie watching to the free online movie site Awooh, which may or may not be up and running all the time. There's one Megavideo perk about this site that totally rocks though, but you can check that out yourself in your own time.

Disclaimer: This is not a review, but a response from a friend who urged me to quite Netflix and start using Awooh. You can be the judge.

Genetically Engineered Gelatin? Tell Me something I don't know!

7/15/2011 07:05:00 PM · Comments

If you thought you were safe eating Jello, especially vegetarians, think again. If you haven't figured it out yet, Jello is made from denatured collagen. That collagen is found in the bones and skin of cattle and pigs, not to mention the capsules for the medications you take.

Now Chinese researchers have created a new gelatin using genes that produce human collagen and inserting them into yeast. The yeast then produces human-derived gelatin.

So the next time you enjoy your jello jigglers, you may just be eating human gelatin. That's too bizarre!

Are You Still Buying Printer Ink At Office Suppy Stores?

7/15/2011 07:04:00 PM · Comments

Several months ago I found the deal of a lifetime on an Epson printer. The printer was originally priced around $400.00 and it was way out of my price range. Furthermore, I didn't need such a professional setup since I was using it only for papers and advertiser schedules. I figured I would try another store until I found a table near the front door that had display printers on sale along with the used printer ink that came with them. I actually found that professional printer for $98.00. I couldn't believe it....my fiance was going to flip out considering he uses the same printer on the college campus for one of is Calculus classes.

There had to be a catch I thought. "No catch", the salesman told me. He informed me that the printer was just last year's model, but I would still be able to get the ink. I then looked at the price of the full price ink, and it was almost as much as the printer. "There was a catch",  I thought. I had been buying cheap ink online for years for my HP, so I was hoping the online store I used for cheap printer ink would have the correct supplies for this older Epson.

Although my fiance would prefer to use this printer for his online assignments he printed out for class, I was thinking I would actually be able to expand my correspondence with my advertisers, since I now had more capabilities. Not to mention, I just purchased cheap ink, remanufactured mind you, but with the same usability as the overpriced printer ink at the office supply stores. Not only had I saved over $300 on my new printer, but I saved  92% off the retail price of ink. The entire experience, and this doesn't happen to me all that often, has saved me money and increased my bottom line profits with my archaeology website.

99 Rooms of Creepy Sounds and Abstract Animation and Art

7/08/2011 10:32:00 PM · Comments

Although the 99rooms experience, brought to you by rostlaub, came out in 2004, I was surprised to hear that many of mt artsy friends had never heard of it.

99Rooms is an unique internet art project that mixes wall painting, photography, animation and sound. Shortly after its launch in June 2004, more than 5 million individuals throughout the world have already visited this interdisciplinary composite work of art. 99Rooms stemmed from the mystical, often apocalyptically charming pictures created by Berlin artist Kim Köster within the countless vacated premises of East Berlin‘s industrial sector.

From my perspective, and I'm not sure if this is the goal of the artists, the rooms are positively creepy.  There's even one particular room, and I swear I'm not making this up, that features this strange little man in  the corner of a blood colored room. Reminded me of the SAW movies. Eek!

You'll experience a painted man with a creepy cough, and an even creepier voice once you move your cursor. How about a cockroach the size of you head?

The trick to 99rooms seems to be, finding a way to unlock the animation, which will then allow you to move to the next room. So yes, in a essence, it's like solving nearly a hundred puzzles.

Never Buy Retail Without Coupon Chief

7/07/2011 08:12:00 PM · Comments

As a student, I always look to save money on my retail purchases, and most of my shopping is done online. Trust and security are of the utmost importance for my online purchases. Personally, I do use coupon sites, but I've found there are several sites that make it quite difficult to obtain an actual coupon code. I want the luxury of right clicking on a code and having it copy to my clipboard. All I have to do is paste it during checkout. There is only one site that I trust, which has allowed me to do this, and  when I find a coupon site that claims to rival its competitors, I want it live up to this reputation. Coupon Chief does this and more!

Coupon Chief is now one my first stops before I ever shop online. If you have a particular store in mind, and I usually do, just enter it into the search box. Scroll through the online coupons, and once you find one, click on the coupon code. Copy the code and go directly to your online retailer. No matter if you're using Old Navy Coupons or Amazon coupons, all you have to do is copy and paste the coupon code into the site's coupon area when you check out.

If you're a site owner who sells products, you can submit a coupon to Coupon Chief, which will be available to the 250,000 users they receive every month. Sound great right? Coupon Chief even has a community section which lists recent experiences with the coupon. You can even let users know whether the coupon works. As a website owner myself, not only is this a great selling point for any products I might want to sell, but I can offer a coupon to my customers on Coupon Chief for free!

"It was apparent to us that the Allied bombing of WW2 represented an inadvertent environmental experiment on the ability of aircraft contrails to affect the energy coming into and out of the Earth at that location."

Ridiculous Pool Paint attack

I haven't said gnarly in years, but this painted pool created by some pretty ingenious skateboarders is totally bad ass! Using a high-tech remote controlled spray can apparatus mounted to the underside of skateboards...every line a skater took became the paint job of the pool.

Ecological Replacement: Jaws Did Not Dominate 420 Million years Ago

7/06/2011 07:59:00 PM · Comments

Over 420 million years ago, deep in the Silurian seas, some fish began developing a defined upper and lower jaw that allowed them to devour large and hard-shelled organisms.

The consensus seems to be that revolutionary mechanism did not set off a wild spree of evolutionary experimentation in design. Instead, after an initial bump of diversification—and a few exceptional mandibles in extinct placoderms and lungfishes—the major groups of jawed creatures whose descendents persist today, such as the ray-finned fishes and early tetrapods, seemed to stay relatively uniform.

Anthropology 101: Seperate Fields Explained

7/04/2011 12:08:00 PM · Comments

Most of use have seen the movie Indiana Jones and have one idea in mind as to what archaeologists really do. The truth is so much more simple than the fantasy of Hollywood film. Yet, this misinterpretation often translates in the wrong way when individuals are seeking a degree in anthropology.

Archaeologists have the same goal in mind as anthropologists. They learn everything there is to know about a particular society. The difference is, they can’t talk to the people or ask questions. Why? They’re all dead. Archaeologists study the things they left behind and infer behavior and information from that.

Ancient Digger Archaeology explains the basics of the four field approach and the separate fields of Anthropology.

Tibetan singing bowls

Science Fair just featured an amazing piece on the singing bowls of Tibet. We've heard of the famous singing rocks and the musical stones of Skiddaw, but who would have thought a piece of pottery could have such a delightful, harmonious sound.

University of Liege in France and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used a technique called "Fluid Dynamics" along with some perfume and bronze alloy Tibetan bowls, to create dynamic sounds.

The Tibetan bowls are "a type of standing bell played by rubbing or striking the bowl's rim with a mallet, causing the bowl to vibrate and produce a very characteristic, rich, ringing".

The study, which was published in the journal Nonlinearity, explains how water droplets are propelled from the surface of the bowls as they are excited.
