Walled In: Ancient Pyramids Meet Modern Architecture

7/31/2010 05:31:00 PM · Comments

Walled InUnderrated and incredibly twisted movie "Walled In" staring Mischa Barton shocked me with its storyline. Walled In, released in 2009, when directly to DVD and I'm not exactly sure why. There are several thriller movies that should have never made it to the big screen.

Based on the best-selling French novel Les Emmurés by Serge Brussolo, Walled In is the English-language debut of critically-acclaimed French director Gilles Paquet-Brenner. The film was shot in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The British magazine FemaleFirst gave the film 4 out of 5 stars. They described it a "psychological horror that’s sure to send chills down your spine" and continued to refer to it as a "gritty Mirrors meets Captivity horror thriller will have your heart pounding in your ears

I'm a sucker for serial killer movies, however this movie is an entirely new monster. Imagine an architect that studies the ancient history of the Egyptians and Mayans, creating structures made out of human blood. It's quite a paradox of sorts, building on the theory that the wonders of the world have lasted because they are alive.

L'Autre Animated Offbeat Short Film

7/27/2010 05:54:00 PM · Comments

L'autre _ the movie from Tanya Aydostian on Vimeo.

So imagine you're in a padded room. Ok, right away that just sounds bad. You open your eyes and pretty little butterflies are landing on a Tim Burton inspired tree. You look down at your feet and notice you're barefooted. You pick up the socks laying neatly across one of the roots of the tree and instead of putting them on your feet, you put one on your hand. While you amuse yourself with your sock puppet, you once again fall asleep in your padded room.

Is it a dream sequence or just a perfectly crafted animated short film? L'autre _ the movie, created by Tanya Aydostian, Clovis GAY, and Alexandre HÉRAULT from the School of Animated Trades, Angoulême, France, is an awe inspiring 3 month graduation project.

Dog Beds For Large Dogs

7/24/2010 06:27:00 PM · Comments

How important are your dogs to you? I’m sure when it comes to your precious pooches, only the best will do. I never realized how important it has become to create a sustainable environment for my dogs, one in which incorporates healthy eating, entertainment (can’t miss those trips to the dog park), special toys and treats, and most important,  large dog beds.

I had never purchased dog beds before, but at the present time, my Siberian Husky requires a special bed for his hips and legs. He had previously insured himself at our house before we moved, jumping off railroad tiles onto the hard ground. He deals with joint pain all the time, so I decided to make his life a bit more comfortable.

The dog beds for large dogs that I considered when I started shopping around were easy to clean, machine washable to be exact, and used allergy free fabrics. The materials in cheaper dog beds can actually cause your dog to develop sores on their legs. Furthermore, they're just not comfortable for your dog. A dog's den should be soothing and safe, not scratchy and damp.

If you are searching for dog beds at your local pet store or online supplier, please make sure the bed has industrial strength, Canvas, Micro-fibers, Cordura and Premium grade "virgin high memory" upholstery fiber fill. If it doesn't, don't buy it!

Lace Hill over Yerevan in Armenia

7/23/2010 04:39:00 PM · Comments

Instead of a towering Iconic image, disconnected from historic, horizontal Yerevan, Lace Hill stitches the adjacent city and landscape together to support a holistic, ultra-green lifestyle, somewhere between rural hillside living and dense cultured urbanity.  The 85,000 square meter (900,000 sf) proposal is a new model of development for Yerevan and Armenia of a high-value spatial fabric, dense with overlapping natural and urban phenomenon.

To create a new, firmly rooted architecture-urbanism-landscape, the project morphs the common urban element of Yerevan, the superblock, to the site, a truncated hill along the natural amphitheater of Yerevan. This act extends the amphitheater and completes the hill, creating more capacity or “seats” for the viewing of Yerevan and Mt. Ararat, the eternal icon of Armenia.

Texas Mom Saiqa Akhter Murders Her Autistic Children

7/23/2010 04:21:00 PM · Comments

Close to 12 years ago when I was in high school, I remember a girl in the band that got pregnant. She hid it well under baggy clothing until she had the child. The problem was, after nine months the baby disappeared. It was found in the dumpster at a shopping center.
No one really knows what drives mothers to do such horrendous acts when it comes to their children, which is why this story about Saiqa Akhter is just so bizarre.

Saiqa Akhter is charged with capital murder after strangling to death her two children- Zain, 6-year-old, and Faraal, two- year- old.  The 911 tape is nothing short of sickening. Saiqa is Pakistani born and the 911 operator had her repeat much of what she was saying over and over because of her  heavy dialect. Listen to the tape here.

Leave it to me to miss a perfectly hilarious video of a child's post dentist visit. "David the Dentist", posted in January 2009, is some entertaining and humorous footage of a dad filming his son who is apparently on some happy juice for the pain. The 35th Annual Great Wellsville Balloon Rally

7/19/2010 01:11:00 PM · Comments

Hot Air Balloonists Converge on Western New York for Annual Rally. It began just three and one-half decades ago; an invitational event for aviators of small aircraft to fly-in from around the region on a pre-determined date and time, to meet and share breakfast. Pilots of small aircraft would be invited to fly their craft to the Wellsville, NY airport on the outskirts of town for this proposed social event limited to just pilots of small aircraft.

Born in the spirit of the fanciful barnstorming adventure movie "The Great Waldo Pepper" (1975, starring Robert Redford,) "The Fly-in Breakfast" was born, an event hosted by the Wellsville (NY) Aviation Club.

The Killer Whale: Largest Dolphin in the World

7/18/2010 05:13:00 PM · Comments

The Killer Whale is greatly misunderstood, especially after the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau, animal trainer at Seaworld Orlando.

Dawn Brancheau, 40, was working with a whale named Tilikum in knee-deep water at SeaWorld in Orlando on February 24 when the animal grabbed her by the ponytail and pulled her underwater in front of shocked onlookers at the park's Shamu Stadium.
Unfortunately,  many of us are unaware of their behavior, so jumping to conclusions about these animals is easily done. In fact, I've always been fascinated by the fact that a Killer Whale can spin a Great White Shark on it's back, allowing the shark to slowly drown. It's amazing to even think that a creature that we only associate with Seaworld shows can kill a shark that has a seemingly notorious persona.

The truth is, however, that an Orca is not a whale at all, but the largest species of dolphin in the world. Furthermore, wild dolphins are extremely aggressive, which explains the behavior of the Tilikum at Seaworld. So the fact that the show has been shut down is not a surprise, really it's a blessing in disguise.

Dr. Paul Spong of Orca Lab studies orca linguistics. Ken Balcomb of the Center for Whale Research discovered the impact that navy sonar was having on whales. Meet the world's leading experts on orcas.

Get a Free Laptop With Mobile Broadband

7/18/2010 04:47:00 PM · Comments

As a full time blogger and student, I usually carry around my laptop everywhere I go. I frequent coffee shops and bookstores alike to catch a break from writing in my spare room in my home. It’s necessary, at least for me, to also carry a mobile internet device that hooks right into my laptop. These are also available for Macs and PCS, if you’re in the market for mobile broadband.

However, what if you can’t afford a laptop as a student? Let’s face it, it’s one of those resources every student needs to make the most out of their experience. Personally, I take mine to class to type notes during lectures, keeping my life and my study schedule that much more organized.

Today, there are several companies that are providing a free laptop with broadband in a bundled package. Whether you’re a student, writer, or you just want to play gamed on the go, I don’t think there’s a better offer for those of you that want internet and a laptop.

Companies like T-Mobile, Carphone warehouse, 3 Mobile, Orange, and even AOL, have come out with super savvy and cost effective ways for consumers to get what they want and at a great price. I’m an HP user, and although I already own a laptop with broadband, I can’t help but envy the individuals that can save more money than I am from these packages.

For those of you that are just looking for a free laptop, that’s not what these packages are about. If you already own a PC or MAC and you want to go mobile but don’t have the funds to purchase a laptop, these packages are hard to beat. Over the course of a year, you will only pay for your broadband service, which simply covers the cost of the laptop. This means you’re internet is completely free. Check the packages out and see for yourself.

Is the UFO Seen in China a Hoax?

7/16/2010 10:45:00 PM · Comments

You Tube videos are burning up the net with footage from the UFO sited at Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou, China which stopped operations on July 9, 2010. Many are saying it's a rocket that launched, but there's no proof of that conclusion, only comments stating that it looks like a Russian rocket launch last year. I certainly have my doubts, as I've seen rocket launches in Cape Canaveral and they do resemble the footage in this video. You be the judge.

Unique Mailboxes For Your Home

7/16/2010 10:31:00 PM · Comments

A couple years ago, my uncle started making mail boxes as a hobby. He started out making a bird house, carved entirely out of wood, and integrated a capsule to capture the mail. My mom was the first to have one for her home in Mackinaw. I missed my chance to own one, as he doesn't craft them anymore.

I'm one of those individuals that can create something artistic that represents my unique style by adding a certain flare to whatever I buy. However, there comes a time when I don't have the hours to burn to make something for the home, like a mailbox.

For the past year, I've been searching for a a Victorian mail box that I had seen at an estate sale. I frequent antique auctions and estate sales, but I missed my chance to purchase this piece after someone outbid me. I thought, there has to be an alternative and there certainly must be a more reasonable way to purchase exactly what I want.

After searching, I found the mailbox pictured above, which sits upon a pedestal, has a canopy to guard against rain, and locks for added security. The material is light weight die cast aluminum and it's resistant to chipping, scratching, fading, and wearing. From a design standpoint, it certainly fits the Victorian style and it does cost half the price of the antique found at auction.

What do you think? Does it fit the Victorian period?

Notorious Biker Gangs in History

7/15/2010 10:28:00 PM · Comments

The outlaw biker gang can trace its origins to the period after World War II where returning veterans and other roadies began to organize themselves in clubs, pining for the freedom, action and nonconformity that the motorcycle offered.

One of the seminal events in outlaw biker history was "The Hollister Riot," which took place over the July Fourth 1947 holiday weekend in Hollister, California, where some 4,000 motorcycle enthusiasts invaded the small town.

Is the Latest Chupacabra Found a Hoax?

7/14/2010 05:29:00 PM · Comments

Has the Chupacabra been spotted again?

Animal Control Office Frank Hackett described the animal involved in the most recent sightings: "All I know is, it wasn't normal. It was ugly, real ugly. I'm not going to tell no lie on that one." The problem is, for years the legend has failed to turn up a real specimen so to speak.

DNA testing is being done on the latest Chupacabra found, however it's most likely a Xoloitzcuintle, also known as a Mexican Hairless Dog.

Sightings in Puerto Rico in the mid 1990s especially have inflamed interest in this legendary beast whom has more recently been said also live in Mexico and the United States as far north as the state of Maine. Biologists however view this cryptic with a critical eye saying that the witnesses must have mistaken what they saw for some other known animal, usually a sick coyote is cited. I am hoping it’s not another Montauk Monster Hoax again. I want to believe.

The World of Ancient Digger Archaeology

7/14/2010 07:43:00 AM · Comments

I started Friends Revolution close to two years ago on a whim, looking to feature some of my friend's articles. It's now turned a corner and revolved into a mixed bag of sorts, a bag in which I adore. Here at Friends Revolution I can vent and show my offbeat side. My other two history websites are an outlet for me to express my knowledge on the subject of history and archaeology.

As many of you know, I'm the owner of the Ancient Digger, an archaeology site that takes readers on a tour of my life as an archaeology student. Just a few months ago, my blog was picked up for the blogroll on Discovery News under Archeology, giving me an entire new group of readers.

I started TravelSphere to include some articles of a more historical nature, ones in which would not fit the topic of archaeology on the Ancient Digger, but they are wonderfully fascinating just the same.

If you're looking to learn something new, and let's face it we all are, Ancient Digger Archaeology has  a special Monday Ground Up perfect for that occasion. I tend to focus on subjects the readers may not be as familiar with, teaching both you and myself something in the process. Here's the latest news for Ancient Digger, so check it out when you have some time put aside.

Monday Ground Up: Grand Master's Palace in Valletta Malta

Grand Master's Palace is located is Valletta, Malta and was the legendary seat of the Knights Hospitallerof Saint John. The order of the Knights Hospitaller arrived in Malta in the first half of the 16th century, after spending several years in route to nowhere without a base after their expulsion by the Ottomans in 1522.

Saint John's Co Cathedral

Saint John's Co Cathedral in Malta acted as the church of the Knights Hospitaller in Malta during the 11th century, protecting pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. The Saint John's Co Cathedral was commissioned by Grand Master himself Jean de la Cassiere and the cathedral was designed by Gerolamo Cassar, the same architect that designed Grand Master's Palace.

The Log Cabin Building Insect

7/12/2010 04:06:00 PM · Comments

If you thought insects were the only pests that created problems in the home, think again. This unknown insect species is a master builder, creating itself a virtual log cabin mansion, and all with the strength of his back.

Some kind of adhesive was used by the weird insect that keeps these logs glued firmly together. The logs themselves are not really of woody material but some kind of calcium carbonate secreted by the weird insect. Wherever the weird insect goes, the whole ‘log house’ goes with it.

  • No added growth hormones
  • No antibiotics
Bright Beginnings Organic Formula has also been proven to promote brain development and healthy eyes, and all ingredients are from natural sources.Bright Beginnings Formula is for ages 0-12 months and priced reasonably for any family on a budget.

I'm not a mommy myself, but my sisters have 4 children all together. Both use Organic products in their household, so I mentioned Bright Beginnings to them as well. My sister, with her last infant, had some complications and could not breastfeed. She had to seek an alternative, so Organic Formula acted as the next best thing. She's a full time nurse and was aware of the benefits of using Organic Baby Formula. Her son's brain development wasn't on par with what is should have been, but she believes the Formula did make a difference and now he's getting along wonderfully.

The 2 Year Run of the Barefoot Bandit Ends

7/11/2010 10:35:00 AM · Comments

Teenager Colton Harris-Moore, otherwise known as the "Barefoot Bandit", was finally arrested in northern Eleuthera after a two year run stealing boats, cars, and even airplanes. How does one steal an airplane? Geez!

Officers have taken Colton Harris Moore to Nassau, the country's capital, where he faces possible extradition to the United States. Moore is a skilled outdoorsman and grew up on Camano Island in Puget Sound, making his capture a bit tricky as he blended into the landscape.

Like a scene out of "Catch Me if you Can",
Harris-Moore, who has been running from American law enforcement since escaping from a Washington state halfway house in 2008, gained fame and thousands of fans who admired his ability to evade arrest. He is suspected of stealing cars, boats and at least five planes — including the aircraft he allegedly lifted in Indiana and flew more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) to the islands off Florida's coast, despite a lack of formal flight training.

Humpback Whale Deliberately Swats A Diver

7/08/2010 06:15:00 PM · Comments

Danny Moroe is a documentary film maker who traveled to the Caribbean to film the Humpback whales mating and romancing. On this rare occasion, the diving expedition takes a frightening turn when a humpback whale deliberately swats a diver with its massive flukes.

While a male and female are in a courtship, the camera men work as a team, taking turns diving down to film. One diver gets a bit to close to the Humpback's tail which measures 15 feet across and was deliberately attacked. Whales tend to moved their tails sideways only when threatened and this particular whale swatted the diver in the head, sending him to the surface with, I'm sure, a massive headache.

If you thought you couldn't afford to take a weekend with your friends and visit some tropical paradise, you may be wrong.  The Hampton Chain of Friends Sweepstakes is a contest run by Hampton Hotels that's giving you the chance to win 100 hotels rooms for two nights for you and all of your friends. The winner will also receive $5000 to help pay the tax for the weekend!

If you are not the lucky Grand Prize winner, you still have a chance to win one of the 100 First Prizes, including a weekend for you and three friends. It's super easy to sign up, I know I just did. Who wouldn't jump at a chance to take their friends to a hotel for the weekend. My problem would be finding 100 people to go with me. I might have to borrow a few friends for this type of excursion.

So what would you do if you won the prize? I have to say, I haven't been to Mexico in a while. I'd like to hit the beaches of Cancun or Puerta Vallarta. The last time I was in Cancun, I was with some of my girlfriends in 1996. Yes, it has been a while. It be great to plan a  reunion, and I'm sure we could all bring our significant others and that would take care of all the hotel rooms.

The Hampton Chain of Friends Sweepstakes is open to all of you, not just Hilton Honors members or those that have previously stayed at a Hampton.

Open to residents of the 50 US, DC, Canada (excluding Quebec), UK and Mexico. Begins 12am CT on 6/1/10 and ends 11:59pm CT on 9/4/10.
