Built around the 15th or 16th century, this tower was used to protect inhabitants from English raids. However, during the 16th century it was attacked several times by English soldiers.

Smailholm was a great inspiration to Sir Walter Scott who visited the tower with his grandfather when he was a boy. The site was later the inspiration for some of Scott's poetry including The Eve of St John and also Marmion.
