The Surreal Appeal of the Falkirk Wheel

6/29/2009 07:38:00 PM · Comments

Rj Evans brings us another fascinating article about a bizarre boat lift located in Scotland that connects two waterways.

Connecting two separate water ways may seem, on paper, and easy objective to achieve. What happens, though, when the two systems are twenty four meters apart? Plus, the word apart here means in terms of height. The solution? An incredible rotating boat lift that looks like something from a steampunk movie. Read More

Guiding Young Girls Along the Right Path

6/29/2009 06:50:00 AM · Comments

Last May, I had traveled to Pensacola Florida with my fiancé to enjoy the weather, and attend a wedding of one of my closest girlfriends. The trip was not all geared towards fun in the sun; however, it did give both my fiancé and I the opportunity to educate ourselves on the local activities.

The Evangel House, which is simply a Theraputic Boarding High School, was having their Family Challenge Retreat held every May, not far from the wedding location. Considering my fiancé, many years ago, used to be an associate pastor and house father at BoysTown, he was interested in seeing how local clubs, camps, and groups were giving back to families and communities.

What we did observe was a wonderful facility that provides girls with the necessary skills to fight substance abuse, along with facing family issues that the young girls couldn’t face on their own.

Mark Barrentine, the founder of the Evangel House, is a licensed clinical social worker and Christian Psychotherapist. He received his Master of Social Work degree from Tulane University in 1996. In November 1999, Mr. Barrentine was appointed Executive Director of Teen Challenge of Acadiana. Through his tenure there he developed the unique Evangel House therapeutic treatment model which integrates professional Christian counseling with biblical values.

The school is staffed with teachers, many of whom have their Masters degrees in education, social workers, and psychologists willing to put in the time to help young girls live a full and satisfying life.

If you are planning on moving to St. Martinville, Louisiana during your teens transition, rest assured you’ll feel at home in this historic town which was once the home of Cajun culture and traditions, and it is in the heart of Cajun Country.

Science and Marine Kelp Forest Photography

A kelp forest typically occurs in cold, nutrient-rich water and is among the most beautiful and biologically productive habitat in the marine environment.

The coast of California is home to one of the most spectacular kelp forests in the country. Within the confines of this massive forest of kelp there lies an abundance of fishes, invertebrates, algae, marine birds, and marine mammals.

Through the 19th century, the word “kelp” was largely associated with seaweeds that could be burned to obtain soda ash ( sodium carbonate). Kelp was also used directly to refer to these processed ashes.

Interestingly enough, Kelp ash is used in soap and glass production. Until the Leblanc process was commercialized in the early 1800s, burning of kelp in Scotland was one of the principal industrial sources of soda ash . Alginate, a kelp-derived carbohydrate is used to thicken products such as ice cream, jelly, salad dressing, and toothpaste, as well as an ingredient in exotic dog food .

During the Highland Clearances, many Scottish Highlanders were moved off their crofts and went to industries such as fishing and kelping . During the 1820s, when there were steep falls in the price of kelp, landlords wanted to create pools of cheap or virtually free labor supplied by families subsiding in new crofting townships.

Kelp harvesting and processing was a very lucrative way of using this labor, and landlords petitioned for legislation designed to stop emigration. However, the economic collapse of the kelp industry in northern Scotland led to further emigration, especially to North America.

How to Deal with a Pet's Death

What an emotional day it has been. Over the past three days, my 20 lb tomcat has been suffering through something that has been completely undetected. We had been feeding him ensure and and water through a syringe because he refused to take any food or water on his own.

Yesterday, he started wheezing and his back legs became completely paralyzed. I had no idea what to do, and I was in the middle of summer finals. I tried to stay with him all night, waking up sporadically to make sure he was still ok.

After I returned from my final today, I found him barely breathing on the floor in the laundry room. I told my fiance to get on some clothes, we're going to the VET.

When we got there, poor Tipsy was crying out in agony. We took him into a room with a sloped table. The nurse took his temperature and told me is was subnormal. I was completely dumbfounded. I just didn't understand. All of his symptoms had happened so suddenly and his entire body just shut down.

The Vet did a rectal exam and found a blockage. His entire body had filled with fluids and his lungs were flooded. His kidneys had shut down. She gave me the option of operating, which would give him a small chance of survival, while living with a terminal illness; or, she suggested putting him down.

The entire experience was surreal. I couldn't believe I had to make a choice to put down the first cat I ever owned. I contemplated, and figured it would be completely selfish of me to hold on to him. No one wants to see an animal suffer. I volunteered to stay in the room.

They took out the syringe of anesthesia, found a vein, and ended his agony. His eyes met mine and we gazed at each like a mother and child do when they are so devoted to one another. I knew that he wanted this to end. This single moment in my life was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. I held the life of someone in my hands, and I made a choice,

On the ride home, I cried until my eyes swelled and I looked for a sign. Why would this happen to something so innocent and why was it allowed to happen at all?

I knew when this day did come, I wouldn't be able to handle it. I didn't know how to feel, and I couldn't stop the tears from running. I got in my car, and I seeked for something soothing. I found myself at the Humans Society, slowly drifting around, looking into the cages of so many loving and appreciative animals.

I went into the cat room, and in a moment of clarity, I looked to the left, and what should I find? There was a 20 lb black and white tomcat with the exact same demeanor and personality at Tipsy. Although I had no intentions of adopting him, I asked one of the workers about his history. She told me that he had been brought in as a stray, a couple hours ago. Ironically, the time stamp was the time of death of my Tipsy.

And so my point is, and I'm not really sure if there is one, with death comes life. I believe that animals spirits will live on through each other. At least it felt that way when I was there.

I was able to talk to a grief counselor about what had happened, and I was surrounded on every corner by adorable puppies and kittens. It was therapeutic for me, and for just one brief moment, I was at peace.

Let us remember Tipsy, and appreciate that joy he brought to my life for 6 years. I love you Chubbs.

The Number 23

6/22/2009 02:07:00 AM · 2 comments

The number 23 is a connection that may have caused the mass suicide of 39 people, including Marshall Applewhite (Leader of the Heavens Gate Suicide Mission) in 1997 and it is also associated with the newest form of UFO Religion called the Unicarious Cult.

The connection begins with the Number 23 being the sacred number of Eris, goddess of discord. Eris is known to be the smallest known dwarf planet in existence. It so happens that, “Eris had been adopted as the matron deity of the modern Discordian religion, which was begun in the late 1950s”.

In 1959, at 28 years old Marshall Applewhite had started writing about the galaxy, extra terrestrials, and the outer limits of space. Ironically this happened after the formation of the Discordian religion that had begun in the 1950’s.

In 1972, Marshall Applewhite met Bonnie Nettles at a psychiatric sanatorium, where he had hoped to be cured of homosexuality. At the time, both Applewhite and Nettles had both been previously married for 23 years.

By 1975, they had developed the “Total Overcomers Anonymous” which later became “Heaven’s Gate.” They originally recruited 21 people and when you add Nettles and Applewhite to the mix, that makes the number 23.

There is no reason to elaborate on the happenings of that day in 1997, as present day members are hoping and still maintaining the website in the hopes that more people will join in their journey towards a more transcendental ideal.

This leads me to the connection shared with the Unicarious Cult. There is little known information about this newfound religion. The members are mostly comprised of fallen Christians who believe their God had failed them, desperately seeking a new supernatural being.

They believe that there are two brothers that live under the layers of Mars that are more advanced in the subjects of Economics, Warfare, Family, and many other subjects.

They believe if the spacecraft comes, it comes. If it doesn’t, it was not meant to come at that time. They believe in past life experiences, attributing their ailments to former accidents that happened years ago during World War II or even the Civil War.

The Unicarious Cult is still characterized as a UFO cult, as was Heaven’s Gate. Both groups believed in a Utopian society in which everyone was assumed to be perfectly clean, perfectly equal, and free from streams of thought that interfered with meditation.“Stories of extraterrestrial civilizations and alien interventions in past lives form a significant part of the belief system of Scientology”.

On the Hunt for a Commercial Microwave

6/18/2009 08:47:00 AM · Comments

Ever since I sold the restaurants, I have forgotten how nice it is to have one of those commercial microwaves that takes a snippet of time to defrost roasts, amongst other things. Yes, I do have one of those built into the wall type of contraptions right now, but since I continue to do all the cooking around here, I told my fiance that I wanted a commercial microwave along with some other commercial restaurant supplies that I just couldn't find at Walmart.

I know what you're thinking. Why can't I use the same Rubbermaid or steel tool you can find the local supercenter? I was a Chef remember. Low quality cooking just doesn't exist in my eyes.

The Decade of Death: Hardly a Time of Flower Power

6/17/2009 10:04:00 AM · 4 comments

There is a darkness in humanity masked under the cloaks of fine living and personified ideals, and through history those ideals were characterized as the fabric of life.

Murder has evolved over time bringing out the beast in those that see darkness. There is a certain passion that resides in these tainted individuals that seek to destroy, or rather covet what is far from their reaches, yet not unattainable.

During the 60's, JFK was the voice of reason, a shining beacon of hope of what we could accomplish. However, the dark stained scum of humanity once again ended all hope, taking an innocent life on November 22, 1963. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was "shot once in the back, once in the neck and was killed with a final shot to the head by Lee Harvey Oswald, an employee of the schoolbook depository from which the shots were suspected to have been fired".

During this time, the news was reporting hundreds dead in Vietnam. Black civil rights activists confronted the racist South, and they were met with a grueling death and beatings. In fact, in 1964 activists during the "freedom summer" Michael Schwerner, James Cheney, and Andrew Goodman were murdered by white supremacists.

May 4, 1970 four unarmed Kent State University students were murdered by members of the Ohio National Guard . "The Guardsmen shot into the crowd 67 times for 13 seconds, wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis."

Martin Luther King Memorial

In the late 60's, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated point blank for defending integration and equality for all Americans. This just reminds us that the humanity of man have never changed, using brutal strength to end a life that is unwarranted and completely unjust.

Source

To make matters worse during the 60's, Charles Manson, the dead head ,ex-con, demon murderer believed that there was to be an apocalyptic race war that he named 'Helter Skelter". During the time of Manson, the media was walking all over law enforcement glorifying the murder scenes. It shouldn't have been a surprise to many considering he was born to a sixteen year old alcoholic that sold him to another women for a pitcher of beer.

At the end of the decade, a new breed of killer was on the loose. The Zodiac killer was never found, and the lack of evidence is of no help to investigators. All that has been preserved are three coded letters providing cryptic clues into the past of a man that was seeking God-like power. At least that is what the media portrayed, and that is what he wanted. He was quoted as saying "I will be reborn in paradise. Those I have killed will become my slaves". The last conformed death was on October 11, 1969.

Interestingly enough, one victim survived describing his chilling appearance. He wore a square hooded suit with the zodiac symbol in the middle of his chest. It was unique and positively Medieval.

The decade of the 60's was reaped in horror and blood. Many new agers believed this was supposed to be a time for peace, and it should have been. But for many, it was a decade of death.

Lost at Sea: Shipwrecks

6/16/2009 08:13:00 AM · Comments

Although we usually associate the unfortunate shipwrecks found in the ocean as sunken treasure, sometimes these amazing vessels end up washed on shore, let for all those that seek an untold story.

RJ Evans explains what happens when you use a single anchor to ride out a storm and the chain of the anchor is too short. The ship, the New Carissa, dragged its anchor and the crew failed to notice that the ship was moving. Once they did detect movement it was too late to properly raise the anchor and move away from the shoreline. The anchor was raised but by this point it was too late for the ship to be saved.Read More

The economy in the United States has now come to a point that citizens are losing their homes, their jobs, and everything they hold dear. People are making drastic changes to survive and put food on the table for their families. So why, as struggling citizens of this country, should we concern ourselves with a corporate giant that is declaring bankruptcy? In fact, if you knew they had a hand in the murders of six million people, would that make a difference?

In March 1929 General Motors purchased majority shares of the Opel car company (German), taking full control of all operations in 1931. Shortly after, a second plant was built at Brandenburg for the production of ‘Blitz’ light duty trucks. Read More

brings us some of the most fascinating high sky platforms that you can enjoy from the top. Gaze upon the mountains or the canyons from high altitudes. It's only a short walk or ride up to the top.

Make no wonder they call this the “balcony of the Alps”. This sky walk rises 2,700 meters above sea level and is set high on a 250 meter vertical rock face of the Hunerkogel. This may be up in the clouds but the 360 degree panorama makes up for any fears you may have when you arrive. When you reach your destination you get to see Solvenia in the south to the Czech Republic in the north. You have to realize that the height of this skywalk is higher than Niagara Falls and higher than the Iguazu waterfalls in Brazil. Don’t turn back now, stay with me. Read More

Organic Gardening: Good for the Environment and your Health

6/11/2009 09:16:00 AM · 2 comments

When I was little, my mom and I used to play around in the flower garden. She would plant flowers, and I would dig them up. That may explain why I have such a hard time growing anything except cactus, tomatoes and roses.I have come to the conclusion that there are something’s I’m good at, and others well, I need a bit of help.

I have always tried to surround myself with orchids, plants, and any other flower that encourages spiritual and bodily comfort. In so doing, I always try to make sure I am growing and cooking with Organic products. For me, it’s a personal choice. I just feel that using natural products will aid in the health of my garden.

I have found that many people are following this trend as well. My next door neighbor, who actually works at a nursery, tells me all the time that she encourages organic gardening for promoting long life out of your garden and plants.

In my own home, I have a cactus garden, as well some Dolly Parton Rose Bushes that were planted before I purchased the home.

My Cactus garden is by far my favorite attraction. I have worked several years with Organics, along with weeding everyday, to see my cactus grow over 4 feet high. Recently, I have noticed that some kind of creature has had a delightful time in chewing the sides of my tallest cactus. I knew it has to be a beetle or grasshopper, but I needed some help. I looked around and found some Safer brand's flower garden care products that I could use to get rid of the little buggers.

I also have had some great success with my tomato plants, if of course my husky stays out of them. I use tomatoes all the time, so it's extremely important to me to have them healthy and happy. In fact, I only used organic Roma and Vine tomatoes when I had the restaurants, so I continued that trend at home using Safer brand's fruit & vegetable garden care products to keep them as fresh and flavorful as possible.

If you practice organic gardening at home, I would urge you to check out Safer Brands products. I have found them to be a great investment in the future of my garden.

Did the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Really Happen?

Karen Gross takes us into the world of Christianity and whether or not the rise of Christ actually happened. A controversial subject meets an opinionated and strong willed mind.

"This is a crucial question in Christianity. I will be so bold as to say that I firmly believe that one cannot be a Christian while denying that Jesus Christ was God, that He came to earth in a human body, that He gave His life as a ransom for our souls, and that He rose again on the Third Day after his death. If you who are reading this do not believe that the four gospels are an accurate eye witness account of the life of Christ, I humbly request" Read More

My Vacation To Utah: So many years ago

6/10/2009 12:11:00 PM · 2 comments

I was looking through my old photos and I found some shots I had taken when I visited Salt Lake and Park City in middle school. I couldn't believe how much I had changed and how much I missed the mountains and vast amount of activities going on at all times.

City Information

Park City is one of the major resort towns in Utah. Of course, this is chiefly because the city is the main location of the United States' largest independent film festival, the Sundance Film Festival, home of the United States Ski Team, training centre for members of the Australian Freestyle Ski Team, the largest collection of factory outlet stores in northern Utah, the 2002 Olympic bobsled/skeleton/luge track at the Utah Olympic Park, and golf courses.

Now, before you start planning what you're going to do when you get there, make sure you look into some Park City Lodging. There are some amazing places to stay in the mountains, and they’re easily accessible, much more so than some of the other surrounding areas. There are also some local luxury retailers, bars and clubs (of course I couldn’t enjoy these since I was 12 years old-next time), hot springs, and hiking and biking trails.

I can't wait to go back, especially considering where my specialty lies these days. In the rocks~

Down There: A History of Satanism

6/09/2009 10:52:00 AM · Comments

presents another account of bizarre and historical importance. Patrick is a well known Flemish writer that never ceases to shock me with his phenomenal tales of ghosts and other mysteries.

Joris-Karl Huysmans, "J.K." for the friends, had been a naturalist writer and then wrote the "bible" of decadence ("A rebours"/"Against Nature"). If you want to read all about his early years, take a look here: Joris-Karl Huysmans and the Essence of Decadence. Now, at the age of 42, J.K. was at a turning point in his life and his career. In 1890 he wrote to the young Dutch novelist Arie Prins that he was looking for "a demoniac sodomite priest" who performed the black mass. J.K. needed him for a new book. He had to insinuate himself into the word of the occultists for what would become "Là-bas" (translated as "Down There" in 1924, and "The Damned"). Read and See More of the History of Satanism

Drop the Bank and Start Banking Online

6/09/2009 10:38:00 AM · Comments

Over the past couple of years, actually probably more than that, I have been using an online service for all of my banking needs, without the hassle of NSF or Balance fees.

For me, this was a personal choice, and a very important one. I have probably banked at every institution that there is, but I was still not satisfied with the service I was receiving. I decided to close all of my bank accounts, and look for an alternative.

I mean, come on, it's the 21st century, not everyone uses bank branches anymore. In fact, I feel as though banking online is much more secure, at least that's my opinion.

Now a days, I use a Visa Debit card to make all of my purchases. I transfer money from my school loans onto the card itself, along with payments I receive for some freelance work.

Mind you, I have had this card for several years, so I understand the benefits of having access to my account 24 hours a day, with balance information and much more.

I have never had any issues with overdrafts or hidden fees because I know what's on my card at all times. It's never been so easy. If you have a chance, and I urge you to do so, I would look into a Visa Debit card today.

Six of the World's Most Deadly, Dangerous, and Disastrous Oceans and Seas

6/05/2009 02:45:00 PM · 1 comments

According to Greek Mythology, Poseidon was God of the Sea and the "Earth-Shaker" of earthquakes. It is he that controls the plan of the oceans to destruct and destroy.

Indian Ocean

  1. Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is the third largest in the world covering close to a 1/4 of the water on the Earth's surface. The warm temperatures maintained by the Indian Ocean make it highly susceptible to monsoons, cyclones, tsunami's, and strong winds.

    Disasters

    Image via Wikipedia

    Image via Wikipedia

In 2004, there was an earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC The quake itself is known "by the scientific community as the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake". The earthquake was caused by subduction (an area of convergence where one tectonic plate moves under another) and triggered a series of devastating tsunami's resulting in over 226,000 deaths, while over 1 million people were left homeless.

    Source

In 1970, there was a catastrophic cyclone that struck E.Pakistan and India's West Bengal . Close to 500,000 people lost their lives in the storm, chiefly as a result of the storm surge that flooded much of the low-lying islands of the Ganges Delta. Till this day, the Bhola cyclone was recorded as one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern times.

  2. Atlantic Ocean

    Source

The Atlantic Ocean is the "second-largest ocean in the world measuring about 106.4 million square kilometres ." The Atlantic is significantly affected by coastal winds, water currents, and the temperature of the water surface. Considering the Atlantic Ocean is so vast, there are certain areas that are far more affected by extreme weather and destruction.

    Image via Wikipedia

The Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Drift are known to warm the atmosphere of north-western Europe, along with the British Isles. The cold water contributes to heavy fog off the coast of eastern Canada and the north-western coast of Africa.

    Source

Of course, one of the most notorious disasters that occured in the Atlantic Ocean was on April 15, 1912 when the RMS Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg, resulting in the loss of more than 1,500 lives.

    Source

Icebergs (large blocks of broken glaciers floating in the water)-are common in the Northwest areas of the Atlantic and "have been spotted as far south as Bermuda and the Madeira Islands." Ships that travel in the surrounding areas are subject to superstructureicing, which is water that freezes on contact, causing the boat to capsize and sink.

The Bermuda Triangle, located in the Western portion of the North Atlantic, is believed to be the site of numerous aviation and shipping incidents. "Popular culture has attributed some of these disappearances to ghostly apparitions, a suspension of the laws of physics, or activity by extraterrestrials."

    Records

According to records, the 1958 Lituya Bay mega-tsunami occured because of an earthquake that occured in the Crillion Inlet, resulting in a landslide. This act of nature created a massive mega-tsunami measuring 524 meters (~1,720 ft.) high.

Tropical Storm Allison was the first storm of the season and lasted 15 days. The storm initially developed in the northern Gulf of Mexico on June 4, 2001, and struck the greater Texas coast shortly thereafter. The storm headed north through the state before turning south, and re-entered the Gulf of Mexico. The storm continued to the northeast, making landfall on Louisiana, then it headed on a southeasterly course across the United States.

  3. Pacific Ocean

    Source

    Image via Wikipedia

The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world covering over 65.3 million square miles. Its name comes from the Latin name "Mare Pacificum, "peaceful sea", bestowed upon it by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan."

SourceContrary to popular belief, the Pacific is far from peaceful. In fact, many tropical cyclones inflict devastating affects on the islands. Not only that, the lands around the Pacific are full of volcanoes and often affected by earthquakes. Tsunamis, which are cause by underwater earthquakes, have devastated many islands and destroyed entire towns.

In the Pacific, marine pollution is by far the biggest culprit of destruction. Chemicals used as fertilizers in agriculture as well as waste from livestock and humans run into the ocean. The excess chemicals that deplete the oxygen in the water create a type of dead zone (an aquatic area with very little life).

  4. Mediterranean Sea

    Source

In contrast to the many destructive oceans in the world, pollution in this region has been quite disastrous in recent years. In fact, the" United Nations Environment Programme has estimated that 650 million tons of sewage, 129,000 tons of mineral oil, 60,000 tons of mercury, 3,800 tons of lead and 36,000 tons of phosphates are dumped into the Mediterranean each year."

    Source

The Mediterranean Monk Seal is among the world's most endangeredmarine mammals because of sea pollution. In fact, according to a 1994 study of the seabed using nets around the coasts of Spain, France and Italy, there was an average of 1,935 items per square kilometre found the floor of the sea. "Plastic debris accounted for 76%, of which 94% was plastic bags."

  5. Aegean Sea: The Legend of Atlantis

    Source

The name "Aegean" was said to be named after the town of Aegae, or possibly the queen of the Amazons who died in the sea, "or Aigaion, the "sea goat", another name of Briareus, one of the archaic Hecatonchires, or, especially among the Athenians, Aegeus, the father of Theseus, who drowned himself in the sea when he thought his son had died."

    Source

During the 1970s, the Islands of Thera became a topic of international importance. Geological sediment samples were taken near the island, and the conclusion was that the sediments may have been linked with a possible explanation of the ancient legend of the lost island of Atlantis.

  6. Sea of Marmara

    Source

    Image via Wikipedia

The Sea of Marmara, or rather Propontis, was a sea that the Greeks sailed through to reach the Black Sea. According to legend, a great storm broke out on Propontis bringing the Argonauts back to an island they had left.

However, there was a conflict which resulted in the murder of King Cyzicus. Cyzicus ruled over the Dolionians, a tribe that inhabited the southern shore of the Propontis.
