B Nelson gives an interesting overview of team sports and the effects on the moral of students that may not participate in them. School is already hard enough for many, without adding to social pressures to be jocks and cheerleaders, or so I've heard. Of course, I see from both sides as I played sports and I was a cheerleader in high school many moons ago.
The problem as I see it is that for some kids, organized sports are the bane of their existence. The jocks and the cheerleaders forming the popular crowd, while the brainy kids are labeled geeks, the artistic kids are labeled freaks, and very little support, if any, is given to either of them.
